At the island’s north-western tip, where the Teno mountains meet the Atlantic, Buenavista Golf — a Severiano Ballesteros course — and Meliá Hacienda del Conde, an adults-only five-star resort, turn seclusion into the real luxury of golf in northern Tenerife.
The vegetation shifts: the banana plantations give way to volcanic rock and terraced fields climbing the hillside. The ocean keeps reappearing around every bend, as if unwilling to miss the drive either. For the last few miles there isn’t a single sign for a water park or a heated pool. That absence is the first clue to what waits at the end of the drive: here, luxury doesn’t announce itself, it’s built as much from what’s missing as from what’s provided.
A sense of seclusion explains almost everything else. It’s there in Severiano Ballesteros’s design, one of the last courses he signed, and in how naturally it sits within this landscape. The Atlantic wind isn’t something to work around; it’s part of the round. Arrival at the hotel sets the pace for the day ahead — colonial Canarian architecture, rooms opening onto Atlantic-facing terraces, and a quiet that here is a sign the landscape runs things, not the clock. From many of the terraces, one glance is enough to see that the course begins where the garden ends.
Out on the course, Seve’s hand is recognisable before you read a single sign. As in much of his work, the layout never asks to be played one way. It invites a decision — when to take the risk, when to lay up, and an acceptance that, facing the ocean, the wind has a say on every hole too. The par 4s punish a lazy tee shot; the five greens that sit hard against the cliff reward the player willing to commit and forgive almost nothing else. Every hole reveals a different combination of cliff, sea and mountain, and that variety matters as much as the course itself.
The round ends roughly where the morning began, only now with an appetite and a different light. El Mirador del Guincho, above the clubhouse, serves Canarian cooking built on local produce, with views over the course and the ocean, open to non-golfers as well. Inside the hotel itself, the choice splits in two: the Montenegro restaurant, with its tasting menu, and the Italian Il Rossmarino.
What follows continues the same sense of retreat. The ALQVIMIA spa runs a year-round treatment programme for a guest who treats rest as part of the trip and every bit as central as the round itself. Through the summer months, a path leads down to the cliff where the Count of Siete Fuentes once swam. Today it is home to Atlántico Ocean’s Club, where a saltwater infinity pool carved into the volcanic rock appears to merge seamlessly with the Atlantic. Here, the place’s character carries as much weight as the level of service.
