Benahavís: plenty to enjoy

Steep hills and winding roads are not an inconvenience when you are rewarded with one of the most beautiful villages in Andalucía, Benahavís. The municipality of Benahavís is located in the mountain side of Sierra Blanca, between Marbella and Estepona, right on the Costa del Sol. However, this does not give enough information about Benahavís if you have never visited it.

Benahavis has a unique location. It is surrounded by exuberant vegetation, lined by many hiking trails and just ten minutes’ away from the bustling life on the coast. Moreover, its white houses are in line with the typical architecture of white villages in Spain.

An inheriting village of tourism on the Costa del Sol; there are hotels, eating facilities, luxury residential houses set in a unique location in contrast to the lively areas on the coast. Nature, gastronomy and golf are the three symbols of this village where there is plenty to enjoy.

Golf

Apart from travelling to enjoy natural surroundings and gastronomy, you have the possibility of playing on one of the twelve golf courses located throughout the length and breadth of its district. Benahavis is a renowned golf destination at an international level. In fact, Benahavis has been the host of events such as the Benahavis Senior Master, the Ladies Spanish Open and finals of the European Seniors for several consecutive years and has received many awards for tourism excellence.

Golf is significantly important in the area not only economically but also socially. It is one of the few villages in Andalucía that offers its citizens the opportunity of attending the Municipal Golf School. This project has been a complete success as it started with six students and now, it has eighty students. This is a clear example of Benahavis’ commitment to local economy, the youth and youth sports.

Nature

Natural surroundings play the leading role in Benahavís. Three rivers go through the village. Some of the most beautiful natural landscape includes one of these rivers, the Guadalmina River. It forms a viaduct known as “Las Angosturas” (The Narrows) because of the narrowness of the ground and it is located next to the “Charco de las Mozas” (Pond of the Lasses), a hollow in the bed of the river that has been declared Andalucía’s Natural Monument. Benahavis has 300 days of sunshine a year as it shares the same weather as the Costa del Sol. Thus, any season of the year is perfect to enjoy the hiking trails around it and many hills from which you have views of the Spanish coast and parts of the African coast a hundred kilometers away.

Gastronomy

Gastronomy is another jewel of Benahavis and it is honored at the Hotel School Sabor a Málaga, a reference top culinary training centre. Benahavis has a great hotel tradition; the first restaurants opened in the 60’s and you can go all over the streets eating different restaurant specialties.
