His final appearance on the international circuit came at the Staysure Marbella Legends, marking the end of a career spanning nearly four decades in European professional golf. At 70, Juan Quirós steps away from international competition — not from the game itself, but from a defining era.

“It’s not quitting,” he explains. “I had been thinking about it with my family for almost a year. It was time.”

While he still feels competitive, he acknowledges the evolution of the sport: “Players today hit it much further. At 50, they are still very strong. The game has changed.”

From humble beginnings to European Tour professional

Juan Quirós’ story is deeply rooted in effort and necessity. Born into a family of eleven siblings, golf was not a choice driven by ambition, but by responsibility.

Working at the golf course during the day and studying at night, he contributed financially from a young age. “Between my brother and me, we could bring home 3,000 or 4,000 pesetas. It mattered.”

Before golf, he played football. A childhood accident changed everything, redirecting him toward the sport that would define his life.

Early success and breakthrough in professional golf

Quirós quickly established himself as a promising talent, becoming Spanish Under-21 champion. However, his path was far from straightforward, marked by limited resources and uncertain opportunities.

Support from members of his local club allowed him to compete and attend qualifying school — a decisive step into professional golf.

A key turning point came through Tony Jacklin, who encouraged him to pursue competition at the highest level. “You have talent. You have power. You have to compete,” Jacklin told him.

With Jacklin’s backing, Quirós gained visibility and sponsorship, eventually earning his European Tour card after finishing fourth at qualifying school.

Career highlights: European Tour and Legends Tour success

Over nearly 40 years, Quirós built a respected career on the European Tour, marked by resilience — losing and regaining his card, and remaining competitive across generations.

Later, he found renewed success on the Legends Tour, where one of his most memorable moments came in Switzerland with a course-record 61.

“That gave me the motivation to keep going,” he recalls.

A farewell in Marbella surrounded by family

His final international event at the Staysure Marbella Legends was particularly meaningful. Held in Marbella, a key destination for golf tourism in Spain, the tournament became a personal farewell.

His wife, children and granddaughter joined him throughout the week. Each round was played alongside a different family member.

“That meant everything to me.”

What comes next: Spanish Senior Championship and national golf

Although his international career has ended, Juan Quirós remains active in competitive golf. He will continue playing in Spain, particularly in Sotogrande and La Cañada Golf Club.

His next goal is clear: to win the Spanish Senior Championship again, where he has already secured five consecutive titles.

“I’ll try to win the sixth,” he says.

A life defined by golf

When asked to choose a defining moment, Quirós refuses. His career is not built on a single highlight, but on consistency, effort and longevity.

“The international circuit ends here. But I will never leave golf. Everything I have, I owe to this sport.”
