{"id":16927,"date":"2019-01-16T13:47:34","date_gmt":"2019-01-16T12:47:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/golfcircus.com\/?p=16927"},"modified":"2019-01-16T13:47:37","modified_gmt":"2019-01-16T12:47:37","slug":"finca-cortesin-reveals-long-term-benefits-of-new-eco-friendly-greeens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/golfcircus.com\/en\/finca-cortesin-reveals-long-term-benefits-of-new-eco-friendly-greeens\/","title":{"rendered":"Finca Cortesin reveals long-term benefits of new eco-friendly greeens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf &amp; Spa<\/strong> is at the forefront of European golf\u2019s drive to become more eco-sustainable after revealing that it is using up to 30 per cent less water since becoming the first course in Spain to feature\u00a0a new, environmentally-friendly, variety of Bermuda grass on all its greens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deluxe resort has experienced a number of wide-reaching benefits since installing a more eco-friendly, cost-effective and sustainable greens\u2019 system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the comprehensive upgrade on Finca Cortesin\u2019s 18-hole championship course in July 2017 \u2013 which also featured the reconstruction of all bunkers using the renowned \u2018Better Billy Bunker\u2019 system \u2013 each putting surface was replaced with a new type of&nbsp;variety of Ultra Dwarf Bermuda grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as needing less irrigation, the greens require fewer pesticides and staff hours to maintain optimum condition all-year-round, with the new, improved, uniform putting surfaces earning widespread praise from both players and the golf industry alike \u2013 including Finca Cortesin winning the&nbsp;2018 IAGTO Sustainability Award for Resource Efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/golfcircus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/SanMiguelFinca-35-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16928\" srcset=\"https:\/\/golfcircus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/SanMiguelFinca-35-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/golfcircus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/SanMiguelFinca-35-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/golfcircus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/SanMiguelFinca-35-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/golfcircus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/SanMiguelFinca-35-696x392.jpg 696w, https:\/\/golfcircus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/SanMiguelFinca-35-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/golfcircus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/SanMiguelFinca-35-746x420.jpg 746w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Foto: Jos\u00e9 Antonio Moreno<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ignacio Soto, head greenkeeper at Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf &amp; Spa and who supervised the greens conversion programme, said: \u201cThe change to this new type of Bermuda grass has surpassed all our expectations and we have received some great feedback from our members and guests who like firm and uniform greens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe greens are already in better condition than they have been in previous years and we expect them to get even better in 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finca Cortesin began the programme to upgrade its greens in June 2016 at a nursery 600 kilometres away, with Soto and his team taking painstaking care and attention to seed the grass by hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having spent 12 months nurturing the new turf under supervised growing conditions, it was transported to the course where the resort\u2019s greenkeeping staff began the meticulous process of relaying all 18 greens and the practice putting green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, with the grass having been grown&nbsp;at the nursery, disruption for golfers was kept to a minimum with the course reopening&nbsp;barely a month after work began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soto added: \u201cWe have experienced numerous advantages since upgrading our greens. The turf was obviously very young but, as we grew it ourselves, it was also, importantly, very clean of weeds which has had several knock-on effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIrrigation has been reduced as much as 30% on the greens\u2019 surface. Apart from water consumption, hand watering in summer time has been reduced to a minimum so, as a result, we are able to save on a lot of labour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn general, we are using fewer pesticides.
