In the heart of Sotogrande, where golf and the Mediterranean lifestyle go hand in hand, The Alto Club is born. With a renovated course, a state-of-the-art academy and the inspiration of legend Suzann Pettersen, this new project promises to be the next chapter in the history of golf in Sotogrande: more inclusive, more experiential and with the unmistakable stamp of elegance that characterises this unique destination.
There are places on the golf map that are much more than destinations: they are experiences that are lived with all the senses. Sotogrande is one of them. On the shores of the Mediterranean and with more than six decades of history linked to golf, in this enclave on the Costa del Sol, the rhythm of life naturally blends with the game – from legendary courses like Real Club Valderrama, Real Club Sotogrande and La Reserva Club, to a community that seems to revolve around fairways and the sea breeze.
This autumn, a new chapter is being added to that history, one that promises to leave its mark: The Alto Club. What was once Almenara has been transformed into something strikingly fresh. The 18-hole course, with its roots in Dave Thomas’s original design and Manuel Piñero’s later refinements, remains the backbone. But now it’s joined by a par-3 layout and an academy that looks to the future of the sport.
The Alto Club Golf Academy, officially opened on 1 September, is a space where golf feels close, social and fun. Instead of focusing only on specs, the experience is what stands out. Golfers can work on their game at a Toptracer-equipped, floodlit driving range, take advantage of grass and artificial hitting areas, or explore custom fitting studios and a dedicated professional coaching zone. A welcoming café and bar building adds a social element, making practice as much about atmosphere as it is about performance. It’s this blend of top-level facilities with a relaxed, encouraging environment that makes the Academy different from traditional models.
The experience is enriched by a unique setting. The proximity to the SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort allows you to alternate practice with moments of relaxation in the spa, a dip in the pool or dinner with a view. And beyond the resort, Sotogrande offers a whole range of lifestyle options: polo, sailing, tennis and a lively marina that reinforce the feeling of being in a place where anything is possible.
With its innovative spirit, inclusive philosophy and ability to inspire new generations, The Alto Club is not just a new course in Sotogrande: it is a new way of understanding golf and the lifestyle that surrounds it. Because here, every shot, every walk, every experience adds to the story of a destination that continues to write its history with elegance and passion.
At the heart of this philosophy is Suzann Pettersen, Solheim Cup legend and global ambassador for the project. Her involvement brings soul to the initiative: “I want the Academy to reflect the values golf has given me – discipline, perseverance, respect,” she says. “Those qualities matter as much as swing mechanics, and they’re what we’ll pass on here.”
Mimi Rhodes, who will represent the destination as its official touring professional ambassador, expressed her excitement at the partnership: “Sotogrande has always felt like home to me. I’ve spent some of the most formative years of my life here, practicing, growing, and enjoying everything the destination has to offer. I’m thrilled to now represent The Alto Club and Sotogrande on the Ladies European Tour and beyond and look forward to returning regularly to prepare and recharge in-between tournaments.”
