In 2007 the company started its commitment to golf. The first step in order to grow in this market niche was the creation of the Golf Section. It aimed to promote this sport in the different hotels in the chain and in the 40 countries where these are located. The grand opening of these activities of the section was the organization of the first season of the Golf Meliá Circuit. The company wanted to award the most important golf enthusiasts as well as the most loyal sponsors, such as Europcar who made possible this years’ 12th+1 Season of the Golf Meliá Circuit. This is thanks to the effort of all the people involved, sponsors and the golf team at Meliá who have placed this Private Amateur Circuit amongst the most important in Spain.
Meliá Hotels International with almost 400 hotels in 40 countries and 50 golf hotels; it is getting golf friendly every year in Europe, the Caribbean, Central America and lately, it had exponential growth in the Asia-Pacific area. The company will celebrate this year’s 12th+1 Golf Circuit. It is an invitational amateur stableford kind of tournament. Since it was created and as it has been organized every year, it aims to be enjoyed with the best and most important hotel clients with a calendar full of golf tournaments in some of the best golf courses located throughout Spain. This would not have been possible without close collaboration between important partners and sponsors who have worked to make this a highly valued and reputed circuit, one of the most important national circuits from a business point of view. This kind of invitational circuit is the signature of Meliá; only the most relevant people can attend by invitation only and the most renowned contacts that have worked to make Meliá grow continuously every year.
Amongst these, we need to mention Europecar, the official sponsor of the circuit, other collaborating sponsors such as Coca-Cola and Heineken as well as others such as Movistar+, Taylor Made, Air Europa, William’s & Humbert and Marcilla. They are all well-known for the prizes the offer: trips, hotel stays, car rentals, middle and long distance flights, sport equipment and sponsors’ packs. The Meliá Golf Circuit is a symbol of harmony, sport and fun.
The calendar this year will start and finish in Andalucía, one of the best golf destinations in Spain and Europe. Andalucía is an important location for Meliá as there are a high number of hotels of the chain in the region. Many are holiday and golf hotels, some with their own golf course and others with golf courses located outside the hotel, however, they always offer the best facilities nearby. Thus, the 12th+1 Golf Meliá Circuit will take place in May, in the Real Golf Club in Sevilla, a prestigious club which has hosted important professional tournaments and circuits.
In June, it is Madrid’s turn at the Encín Golf where there is a long waiting list of enthusiastic golf players every year. There are also other players invited who are eager to start playing golf at Meliá. Galicia will be our destination in July, where the renowned Zapateira Golf Club will admit all the participants in its natural environment. The Basque Country will also participate as a golf destination in September; this is an unavoidable appointment at the prestigious Jaizkibel Club. Tenerife is one of the jewels of the crown; Buenavista Golf at Meliá Hacienda del Conde will be our next stop; it has a golf course which was designed by Severiano Ballesteros that enjoys breathtaking sea views from most of its holes. The Circuit will also be held in Mallorca where the last finalists of the different categories will play the final in October. Son Muntaner will be in charge of this unforgettable golf day.
This year it will take place in November at Sol Marbella Estepona Atalaya Park on the Costa del Sol
Last year’s big final was held at Meliá Villaitana, Alicante (the host of the European Senior Tour) and this year it will take place in November at Sol Marbella Estepona Atalaya Park on the Costa del Sol. It has two courses, the Atalaya Old and the Atalaya New. They will make it hard for both the finalists and all the other players who will also play a game at the same time.
This years’ Circuit will be assisted by Miguel Angel Jiménez, called “El Pisha”. He is a usual Meliá collaborator and a world star. His dedicated and signed souvenirs will add prestige to the highest valued invitational circuit in Spain.
