Designed by the renowned architect and former Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas, the Heathland course is undoubtedly one of the resort’s lesser-known yet most fascinating gems. Its par-72 layout provides a dynamic and visually spectacular experience, with ever-changing landscapes ranging from sweeping plateaus offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean to valleys featuring strategic lakes and narrow fairways demanding precision.
Far from being a mere adjunct to the Links course, the Heathland course has taken on a prominence of its own, thanks to a redevelopment that has enhanced the original design and adapted it to the needs of today’s golfers. The most notable of these is the comprehensive renovation of the pumping station, which now operates using intelligent remote-control systems and has significantly reduced energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. In addition, irrigation has been eliminated in five hectares of non-critical areas in favour of planting mastic trees to promote biodiversity and minimise water use.
The use of hybrid machinery with electric cutting units has also been introduced to reduce diesel consumption and minimise the risk of contamination from leaks in maintenance operations. Another example of the resort’s efforts to maximise water efficiency is the Cirrus Pro irrigation system, which is managed in real time and adapted to local weather conditions.
Using drought- and disease-resistant Bermuda grass on the greens has reduced water consumption and chemical use, and installing solar panels in the car park generates clean energy for the club’s facilities.
